What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin () is a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator, that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries. Bitcoin is just one of many cryptocurrencies and has a set of properties that make it useful as a store of value (finite amount of coins, etc)

How does Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency work?

Bitcoin Transactions are verified by a spread out series of network nodes (computers all over the world) through cryptography (solving hard math problems or some other Proof mechanism) and recorded in a public distributed ledger (think publicly viewable database) called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented in its current form circa 2008 by an unknown person or group of people using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The concept was originally released via a white paper (viewable here) The currency began use in 2009 when its implementation was released as open-source software.
